Everyone is prone to overthinking. Jon Acuff calls those repetitive thoughts as soundtracks. You get to curate the soundtracks for your life.

Key Ideas

Soundtracks are those repetitive thoughts that play automatically in your head and which drives the choices you make. Unfortunately, most of the times, our soundtracks tend to be negative.

We have the choice to choose which soundtracks we want to listen to. He gives this phrase: Retire. Replace. Repeat for improving our soundtracks. Retire the broken ones and replace them with newer ones and repeat the process.

To eliminate overthinking on something, you can do something that moves the needle.

The overthinking loop

Overthinking leads to a lack of action. A lack of action leads to more overthinking.

An interesting idea was the switch and dial model where we think of think of behaviours as on/off switches that we can turn when needed.

Jon Acuff also introduces the idea of a pocket jury - his term for the inner critic and how to beat them.
